Mice Be Gone: Tips and Tricks for Effective Rodent Control

Mice have the same needs as we do: food, water and shelter. Sometimes, some houses are just too comfortable and accessible to these rodents, leading to infestations that become difficult to remedy. So, letโ€™s figure out what could lead the rats to think that your home is also their residence and how to drive them away effectively.

Food

Leaving food out of containers is a common cause of unwanted pests. Despite diligent cleaning, sometimes it canโ€™t be avoided that people leave behind cereals and oats. These plant-based foods are some of the most enticing foods to rodents. By failing to seal these food containers properly, you end up inviting mice into the kitchen.

Consider using airtight containers for cereals and oats to prevent the mice from having a hearty breakfast. And store them in clean kitchen cabinets. Wash all tableware items well and wipe and sanitize the dining table and kitchen surfaces. Also, clean and air dry the chopping boards. Use a vacuum cleaner or broom to clean the floor. Use a mop if there are sticky substances. Donโ€™t forget to clean the mop and let it dry outdoors.

Clutter

Allowing clutter to continuously pile up in your room or any part of the house can become a playground for mice. For these pests, the ideal burrow would be messy spaces and cluttered areas. So, messy bedrooms can become a breeding place for rodents.

Declutter by discarding or donating old, unwanted or unused clothes and other items, and deep cleaning areas prone to clutter buildup. People who hoard items will have the most clutter, and their space becomes a happy place for mice and other pests, leading to a pest infestation. If this happens, call a licensed mice exterminator to treat the area.

Open Doors

An open door or an unscreened door is an invitation for mice or any small critter to enter without your knowledge. While opening the doors or windows allows the cool breeze to enter, itโ€™s also a chance for rodents to enter. If the doors or windows must be kept open, make sure to enforce screens to prevent entry.

Pet Food

Sometimes, we may be able to store our own food properly, but when it comes to keeping our petโ€™s food, we tend to leave it out. Some forget that itโ€™s also important to store them properly. Often, pets leave food in their bowls, the equivalent of us leaving food on the counter.

Ensure that any uneaten pet food is discarded or stored in secure, airtight containers where rodents canโ€™t reach.

Droppings

Mice are attracted to areas with traces of droppings because they sense familiarity and comfort, likely due to the presence of a rodent in that location before. If you had a previous rodent issue and didnโ€™t thoroughly clean it, you could invite old or new mice back.

Ensure that you remove all droppings, clean grease marks from baseboards, and thoroughly sanitize their nesting areas.

Having mice running around may cause several health problems as their saliva and feces can spread bacteria that could contaminate the food and give you allergic reactions. Some dangerous diseases house mice can spread include hantavirus, salmonellosis, and rat-bite fever.

More Mice-Away Tips

There are other ways to eliminate mice from the home, including spraying peppermint oil around your garden or wherever the rodents frequent, placing a bowl of ammonia near their burrow to deter them from spending a longer time there and blocking potential nesting sitesโ€“some of which include the space underneath the decking or any outdoor building. Any holes in the walls, floors, and doors should also be blocked.

In the battle against mice, knowing thy enemy is your best defense. From meticulous cleaning practices and proper food storage to decluttering and safeguarding entry points, you can effectively deter these mischievous mice. Also, a pest control specialist is a phone call away.
