The future of Wi-Fi
We rely on our Wi-Fi connection. In fact, with more of us working from home than before, having the right connectivity can have a huge impact on our day.

Wi-Fi technology allows us to communicate with our colleagues, carry out online research, and access digital documents and resources. However, the technology is evolving and as we look to the future, we’re set to see advances in wireless networks. Here, we look at what’s coming up and the things to expect in the coming years.
IoT and Wi-Fi
The Internet of Things (IoT) has changed the way we interact with technology. Everyday devices around the home and at the office are becoming increasingly interconnected. From smart homes to wireless printing, automated equipment in industry settings and robotics in the agricultural sector, IoT devices are becoming vital to how we live and work.
Wi-Fi plays a pivotal role in providing this connectivity. It enables online communication between devices. As long as we have all the right tech in place, from routers and ports to backup uninterruptable power supplies, we’re well placed to set up IoT devices.
In the future, we’re set to see advancements in spectrum utilization, adding to the range of frequencies that Wi-Fi connections can run on. We’ll also see improved energy efficiency and enhanced security protocols that help to reduce the risk of hacking by cybercriminals.
Wi-Fi 7
We’re about to see the introduction of Wi-Fi 7, the successor to Wi-Fi 6E. A recent report by Wired revealed that, although many people are still getting to grips with Wi-Fi 6, there’s already a new generation that’s set to offer unprecedented speed, capacity, and efficiency.
Features of Wi-Fi 7 will include support for multi-gigabit data rates, ultra-low latency, and enhanced spectral efficiency. These enhancements met the needs of the growing bandwidth requirements and pave the way for emerging technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality, and 8K video streaming.
Exploring alternatives
While Wi-Fi remains the predominant wireless technology for most consumer and enterprise applications, alternative connectivity options continue to provide connectivity.
One of the most well-known forms of wireless tech is 5G cellular networks. This is a quick alternative when we’re unable to access Wi-Fi, especially when we’re away from a network. These offer speed and low latency.
But Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) is another alternative. This uses light waves for data transmission and provides immense bandwidth potential and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Satellite internet promises to bridge the connectivity gap in remote or underserved areas, delivering high-speed internet access to regions beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.
However, Wi-Fi remains one of the most advanced methods for connecting to the internet. It powers wireless devices and is a staple in homes, offices and businesses.
