How to Celebrate Christmas as a Couple Together in Your Home

Your first Christmas after moving in together is an exciting one, but it can also be a little daunting, as you try to figure out what this new version of Christmas might look like for both of you. Here are some ways that couples can celebrate the festive season and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Pick a Theme

Not sure where to start creating a cohesive Christmas feel for your home? Picking a theme can help to narrow down the enormous choice of festive home décor available. Choosing a certain colour scheme, pattern or vibe can also help you get to know your partner – and their tastes – better.

Opt for a colour, print or style you both love and feel you can live with for the whole holiday season, whether that’s a traditional look, such as red and gold, a tartan print, or something a little more modern like a blue Christmas or neutral décor.

Get Decorating

Once you’ve picked out your theme it’s time to deck the halls! Start by decorating the tree before working outwards to spread festive joy around your whole home. Think tinsel up the bannisters, a Christmas tablecloth for the dining table, twinkling fairy lights in the bedroom and fragrant candles in the bathroom. Don’t forget your home’s exterior too- add some outdoor Christmas lights to bring a touch of festivity to your garden.

Combine Traditions

Every family is unique and that applies to Christmas traditions too. If you don’t usually spend Christmas with one another’s families, you may not be sure what your partner expects on the day, and vice versa.

Make sure you communicate and plan well in advance how you’re going to spend the Christmas period, whether it’s at home with just the two of you, or you’ll be splitting time between different houses visiting family.

Discuss what the perfect Christmas would look like to you, and don’t be afraid to hone in on those little details, whether it’s what time you open presents or what you eat for Christmas dinner. Do you spend the day in your pajamas or get glammed up in your best party outfit? Would you prefer to play a game after dinner or put on a feel-good festive film? It’s especially important to nail down the details if there are children involved as they’ll have their own set of expectations too, from what to leave out for Santa (or Father Christmas!) to what they might find in their stocking.

Now that you’ve moved in together, you’ll need to find ways to merge both of your families’ traditions but it’s also the perfect time to make new ones. Choose something that neither of you has done before, whether it’s a Christmas Eve drive around the neighbourhood in your pyjamas to see all the lights day or a Christmas Day walk in the countryside and make it your own.

Get Baking

Baking is a great way to spend time as a couple all year round. It’s fun, it’s cheap and it can help bring you closer together. Plus, you get something delicious to eat at the end of it! What’s not to like?

Christmas provides the perfect opportunity to get baking, whether it’s creating homemade gingerbread decorations for the tree or sweet treats to gift to family and friends. Get baking before having guests over so that your home is filled with a deliciously welcoming aroma.

Throw a Party

Throwing a Christmas party is a wonderful way to celebrate your first Christmas living together as a couple. Invite people over to bask in the festivity of your new home and spend time getting to know your other half’s family and friends even better.

Serve festive favourites like eggnog and mulled wine and opt for a buffet to take the stress out of catering for large numbers. You could organise party games like name that carol or see who can wrap a present fastest using only one hand, or blindfolded! Alternatively, you could simply pop on some Christmas tunes, and get everyone dancing. Don’t forget to meet your partner under the mistletoe!
