Sports and Fun at Walt Disney World: Embracing the ESPN Experience for Families

The Walt Disney Company has made a name for itself over the past century because of the classic animated films they produce, as well as the eponymous theme parks that draw kids and adults alike from around the world to indulge in the childlike wonder of experiencing the locations of their favorite movies and meeting their favorite characters.

Diversifying Assets

That’s just one portion of what makes the Disney empire tick, though, as the company has bolstered their portfolio throughout the years with canny business investments. By folding existing brands like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Lucasfilm, the creators of Star Wars, under their umbrella, Disney has built their brand using the business they know best: movies.

They haven’t stopped there, though, as they’ve delved into other forms of entertainment media too, like when they purchased ESPN in the 1990s, preparing to dip their toes into the world of sports.

While the demographic of sports fans and those who love movies like Cinderella may seem entirely different, that’s the genius of Disney: by making sure they cater to as many people out there as possible, they’re ensuring their success for future generations. Here’s a look at the unlikely marriage between Disney and ESPN and how it has played out over the years.

Wide World of Sports

The Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida, is the flagship program of the worldwide brand, a city in its own right that covers more than 39 square miles of land and employs more than 77,000 people, the third largest employer in the entire state of Florida.

Within those 39 square miles is the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, a family and sports oriented facility that hosts dozens of tournaments in dozens of different sports throughout the year. Those tournaments occupy a wide range of amateur and professional competitions. In normal years, that might be high school football games, but the complex even hosted big league events like the NBA Playoffs during the 2020 COVID bubble, with all the fanfare, sports betting and sportsbook promo codes that come with the professional game.

The location has 11 baseball and softball diamonds and 17 outdoor playing fields that can be used for a wide variety of sports, all helping to add up to more than 700,000 square feet of playing surfaces, the equivalent of more than 12 football fields. When you take into account that nearly two-thirds of the land area at Disney World is still waiting to be developed, those spaces could continue to grow in the coming years.

The Wide World of Sports is the athletic equivalent of the Epcot theme park, as athletes from more than 70 countries around the world come to take part in events like the soccer tournament each year, making a rich cultural melting pot environment for the kids and families that attend.

Kids will get the full professional experience with none of the pressure involved, as they can see themselves play on the big screens with live commentary to match, and you don’t have to be a future superstar in order to take part. With plenty of local sports camps and road races like 5Ks and 10Ks, anyone can get involved.

Even if you don’t like to play sports yourself, there are excellent food, beverage and viewing options that cater to sports fans.

If you love to budget like myself, you’ll love to hear that you can get tickets to the Wide World of Sports for less than 20 dollars a person… and even better, parking is entirely free! Getting a chance to bask in the big league experience for a fraction of the price, all while wrapped up in the magic of Disney is an opportunity that’s impossible to beat.

Getting Ahead of the Game… For the Next Generation

The Wide World of Sports Complex sits at the heart of the Disney business model. In reaching out to the youngest generation of fans by hosting athletic competitions, Disney is building relationships that will last for life: you can be sure that parents will remember that it was Disney who hosted a tournament for their kids to play under the bright lights, and the kids will remember the magical Disney experience as they get a chance to pursue their dreams and meet their idols on the side.

Similarly, the convenient location amongst other Disney icons like the Magic Kingdom and Epcot makes the choice of what to do in your spare time when you aren’t attending a sports competition easy: go meet a Disney icon or hop on a ride like Space Mountain.
